Organizing the mammoth project of the Shah Free Eye and ENT camp involves planning and execution of many tasks by a group of committed and dedicated individuals. The multi-faceted project requires consideration of the following key areas to name a few:

  • Camp asset management
  • Professional recruitment
  • Outside screening
  • Camp screening
  • Refraction
  • Admission procedures
  • Operating theatres management
  • Ward management
  • Pharmacy
  • Logistics
  • Camp Administration office
  • Doctors welfare and event management
  • Publicity

Since inception, the camp has always been setup in a school in or around Thika – whereby the school is temporarily transformed in to a makeshift hospital, with classrooms turning in to operation theatres, wards, kitchen and pharmacy; and as such the timing of the camp has to coincide with school holidays.

The first camp was set up at Mangu High School along Thika – Nairobi highway. It served as an ideal base for the camp for many years before moving on to Thrika Girls School, then Thika Boys School and at present is being set up at the Chania Girls Secondary School.

Adjacent to Chania Girls School is Naidu Hospital and we are quite fortunate that we have been allocated an entire floor, since we set up camp at Chania Girls School in 2014, to set up our operation theatres for the duration of the camp.
